政治心路历程
Political Interest
My interest in politics began in the fifth grade of elementary school. At that time, I was only a child, at the age of eleven, I often took a small bench to Singapore Honglim Park to participate in political mass meetings that the elders cared about. Today, Honglim Park in Singapore is a place for free speech similar to Hyde Park in the United Kingdom.
I believe that my admired art of public speaking and the speech skills of political mass conferences, to a large extent, may have been studied and studied in the political environment when Singapore was founded when I was a child. Especially since I was young, I have been most influenced by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s speeches. He is my political idol and the most admired and outstanding world-class politician and best speaker in my life.
政治瞭望 Political Outlook
In 1973, I was invited to participate in the community grass-roots organizations in Singapore’s Jinsheng District, which was my first step into politics. I have served as Secretary-General of the Committee of The People’s Liaison Office, Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee and Secretary of the District Department of the ruling party. Fifteen years later, under the recommendation and recommendation of Singapore’s Minister of Defence and Minister of Transport and the Arts, Dr. Yang Linfeng, he was invited to join the ruling party headed by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and stood out in the rigorous selection process for future national leaders. Finally, he represented the People’s Action Party candidate, headed by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, in national elections and was elected as a member of Parliament in Singapore’s Jalan Besar District in 1988.
In the past 13 years of my Parliamentary days, I have been “serving the people” day and night. This is particularly true in the work of visiting and interviewing people from house to house. Sometimes, in the work of meeting people every Monday night, I am busy until 1 a.m., only to go home with tired body, but the family are all asleep, I have no complaints; Always feel that the voters voted for the ruling party, is a kind of trust in us; And to support me is a love for me, that is the sacred task that the voters have given me. So listen to the people in the crowd, and it is my duty as a member of Congress to solve the people’s problems. I often think that officials do not do things for the people, not only to the loss of voters, but also to themselves.
In my constituency, there are a lot of voters in the middle and low income groups who are under pressure to live, who are faced with the economic problems of raising children and going to college, and these are the day-to-day government tasks that I have to deal with. Of course, the improvement of facilities in the area, the renovation of the group housing environment and the opening of many inaugurations and celebrations of the Chinese community in Singapore are also part of my busy political career. Frankly speaking, I regret that in today’s rich Singapore, some children still give up the opportunity to study in university because of the poverty of their family environment and come out to find work to subsidize their families. In particular, I have experienced the situation, able to understand these children after giving up college psychological feelings. Therefore, as members of Congress, I often do my best to give them the assistance they deserve, and I always hope that after they have completed their university education, they will come out to work in order to subsidize their families, after all, a good education is an important way to improve themselves and move their families from poverty to prosperity. So, when I see these poor children, with my help to complete the university education, and then have a superior job, but also parents from one-bedroom or two-bedroom poor housing, to four- or five-bedroom group house, I often feel relieved. In my opinion, in a global economy of technological leadership and fierce competition, our country cannot afford to lose any talent. We must do our utmost to help Singaporeans in need to face the growing challenges of the global market, which has been one of my top concerns in Congress.
Since I come from a background in Chinese education, I am often regarded as one of the spokespersons of the older generation of Chinese and Chinese school students in Singapore in the Parliament. Therefore, in my speeches to the Congress, in addition to issues related to people’s livelihood, I also expressed more issues related to the improvement of Chinese and Chinese language, traditional Chinese cultural values, traditional Chinese medicine and other Chinese school students’ deep feelings.
November 3, 2001 was another important milestone in my life… Personally, I decided to leave politics. It was mainly influenced by Chinese leader Jiang Zemin’s July 1 speech. I think Mr. Jiang Zemin’s July 1 speech shows a greater opportunity than China’s post-South Tour Speech by Deng Xiaoping, China’s supreme leader. For me, who went to China as early as 1992 to invest in three major projects, I think I know China, understand Chinese culture, I can make a greater contribution to Singapore’s future economy in China. Because I have always believed that Singapore can achieve today’s economic success, we should thank the many British students in Singapore, without their past efforts and contributions, Singapore’s economy will not be able to benefit from the vigorous development of English-speaking countries, thus shaping today’s successful Singapore. On the other hand, to make another shock to Singapore’s future economy is the new contribution that Singapore Chinese students can make to Singapore’s economy after China’s reform and opening up, which is the responsibility of Singapore as a part of it. In order to move forward, but also for their own business development, although my heart is very reluctant to my voters, my voters are very reluctant to me, but I decided to quickly retreat, smartly leave the political arena, to pursue my other better ideals.
So to speak, in the past 13 years in politics, I’ve learned to look at problems from multiple perspectives, to analyze them, to solve them. It’s not the same problem as when I was young, from two or three perspectives. Over time, if I can pursue a better new ideal, I will give back the economic results I have brought back to society and people in order to fulfill my last wish in life.
